Myself (Lee Knight) and Jonathan Robertson were tasked by Transport for Greater Manchester as a part of their in-house design team with designing and illustrating a Christmas Character on the lead up to Christmas 2017. The concept would be for a character (an elf) to promote the use of Manchesters public Transport on the run up to Christmas using various media, such as Social Media formats, printed posters and Billboards. We just needed a character design, look and feel. (Examples for 2017 are shown earlier on my Behance page). The 2017 campaign was nominated for "best low budget campaign under 50k" at the Northern Marketing Awards 2018.
Based on the success of the campaign in 2017, the Noel the Elf Christmas campaign received a great deal of praise. in 2018 It was decided that Noel would return for another year but this time I had the opportunity and time to develop a style loosely based on the illustration work of Raymond Briggs to give it that real Christmasy feel reminiscent of the Snowman.
Below are some of the various posters showcasing my illustrations to meet the brief supplied by Tfgm's Marketing team. I was supported greatly by designer Jonathan Robertson (tfgm). We worked closely to get the artwork designed and produced to the various formats requested.
On reflection of the success of the 2018 campaign, Noel the elf was viewed by over 2.5 million people on various online media formats on the run up to Christmas. The campaign gained very positive feedback and contributed to a very substantial rise in revenue for Metrolink over the Christmas period. The 2018 campaign has also been nominated for an award at the National Transport Awards 2019 this October.
Noel will return on the run up to Christmas 2019......
